THE BUILD OF 002/60
Neil Twyman and his team started the rebuilding of 002/60 in 2016 with the help of Georges and Claude who would fly over and visit the workshop in Potters Bar during the build period offering hands on advice and direction. Memories came flooding back on their workshop visits as they saw the car they built and race back in 1960 start to come together.
Neil Twyman's team of Tom, Mikey, Giles, Craig, Phil and his son Stephen worked with the great care and attention to detail what was needed in building 002/60. The start of what was to be a long project.
David had an original Ferrari 250 chassis and it was around this "core" original Ferrari 80mm tubular chassis with all the correct dimensions that 002/60 would be re-built.
The first step was to cut off the entire rear and front end of the original chassis exactly as the Gachnang's had done with 0742 in period. A completely new rear chassis cage was constructed to house the original ENV differential and inboard disc braking system.
The original independent front suspension with period Koni shocks was fabricated and the rear with TR60 high fixed suspesion struts built around the rear differential cage. This was the most difficult part of the rebuild with great attention needed to the geometry and alignment of the all round independant suspension as it was built in period.
This was possible with the Gachnang's providing their expertise, memory and original drawings as they visited the workshop on many occasions.
An original Ferrari 250 engine with 4 stud head and an original gearbox were restored and rebuilt.
A new wiring loom and original instrumentation was fitted in the correct and original configuration.
The aluminium body was hand built, rolled and hammered by hand as done by Scaglietti in period. Great care and attention was taken with the shape of the body built by specialist panel/body builder Phil and his son Stephen from numerous period photos, drawings and the Gachnang's overseeing from their visits.
002/60 was finished in time to be invited to race in the Sussex Trophy at the 2019 Goodwood Revival without any testing where it was reunited with a tearful and excited Georges. Unfortunately Claude was too ill to travel.
It will be raced and rallied in Historic events all over Europe and afar and hopefully 002/60 will grace the hillclimbs and circuits that it raced in period.
